According to reports from PubliMetro, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to swoop for Sporting Gijon defender Bernardo Espinosa during the summer transfer window.

The Colombian centre-back has spent his entire career in Spanish football, rising through the B-team ranks at Sevilla before enjoying loan spells with Racing Santander and Sporting Gijon – who he ultimately joined permanently in summer 2013.

The 26-year-old measures in at a lofty 6 foot 3 and has produced decent form this season, averaging 1.5 tackles, 2.6 interceptions, 8.5 clearances and four successful aerial duels per match from his 16 La Liga outings.

The latter statistic is the third-best return of any player in the Spanish top flight, whilst Whoscored have issued Espinosa the highest average rating – 7.09 – throughout Gijon’s first-team squad.

According to Colombian publication PubliMetro, Tottenham are eager to swoop for Espinosa during the summer window when he should be available on a free transfer – something Gijon’s potential relegation, currently two positions and one point away from safety, would make all the more likely.

However, Gijon are hoping to offer their star defender an improved contract that should keep him at the club for the next four years.
