Manchester United will beat Chelsea to the signing of Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, according to the Sunday Express.

The France international has a £57.3m release clause in the latest contract he signed with the Spanish team. It’s believed he would have no issue with moving on should a bigger club activate it.

United are keen to act while there is uncertainty over Jose Mourinho’s future at Stamford Bridge. They’re hoping this distraction will enable them to swoop in now and strengthen an area that has been lacking since Wayne Rooney’s form dipped.

Manchester United’s primary target is Gareth Bale but it will be more difficult to prise him away from Real Madrid, and after the David De Gea debacle in the summer, the relationship between the two clubs has become frosty.

Activating Antoine Griezmann’s release clause is a far easier task and would provide them with a prolific striker while denying one of their title rivals his services.
