According to reports from Goal, Middlesbrough are close to agreeing a loan deal for former Manchester City striker Alvaro Negro.

The powerful forward contributed nine goals to Manchester City’s 2013/14 Premier League title before moving to Valencia, initially on loan, in the subsequent summer transfer window.

But the Spain international has struggled to impact positively at the Mestalla, going on to score just ten goals in 55 La Liga appearances.

The 6 foot 1 front-man now appears to be on the verge of returning to the Premier League with newly promoted outfit Middlesbrough.

The Daily Mail linked Negredo with a move to Riverside last week and the latest reports from Goal claim Boro and Valencia are on the verge of agreeing a season-long loan deal at a cost of £6million.

But signing a former Premier League winner would be by no means Boro’s only coup of the summer – they’ve already snapped up Champions League and World Cup winner Victor Valdes on a free transfer.

Likewise, Aitor Karanka’s side have also been linked with two-time Golden Boot winner Robin van Persie and former Bundesliga champion Neven Subotic.
